SF Son Jarocho Festival | SF’s Yerba Buena Gardens Festival 2023 (May 6 – Oct. 28)

During the 3rd annual San Francisco Son Jarocho Festival, there will be a free performance by Grammy Winner Encuentro de Jaraneros in Yerba Buena Gardens from 12:30 – 1:30 pm on August 14, 2014.

Andrés Flores, Alfredo “Godo” Herrera, and Joel Cruz Castellanos, masters of the son jarocho of Veracruz, Mexico, offer up a remarkable exploration of traditional and modern son. Using traditional instruments such as jarana, quijada, leona, pandero, marimból and requinto jarocho, the unique program presents traditional and original songs interpreted by renowned musicians.

The 3rd Annual San Francisco Son Jarocho Festival takes place from August 14-17, 2014, presented by Brava For Women in the Arts, Accion Latina & Yerba Buena Gardens Festival. Son Jarocho is a folkloric music style from the Southern Mexican state of Veracruz. An Afro-Mestizo hybrid form blending Spanish, Indigenous Meso-American and African elements into a joyous celebration of Mexican identity. In the last decade this style has seen resurgence as many young people have adopted it and expanded the sonic and rhythmic possibilities that it offers.
