Songwriter Showcase: Whiskerman | Berkeley

Join the free Songwriter Showcase at Bec’s in Downtown Berkeley, with solo performances by Graham Patzner of Whiskerman and Madeline Streicek of Mana Maddy, as well as a full band performance by Far East Side (with Jeff Latz).

The Tuesday, September 11 lineup features:

10:30pm – Graham Patzner (of Whiskerman)
The youngest of three brothers and the son of two musicians, Graham Patzner didn’t have much choice. Starting on piano at age five and then moving on to violin, trumpet and guitar, the Whiskerman singer and front-man has cultivated a unique sound that is hard to pinpoint. His voice ranges from smoky to soaring, while his songs span a wide array of moods and genres, yet always remain soulful.

9:30pm – Madeline Steicek (of Mana Maddy)
Multi-instrumentalist and songstress Madeline Streicek (“Mana Maddy”) was born in BC Canada and has been an Oakland local since 2006. Raised on a healthy diet of Maria Callas, Joni Mitchell and Mahavishnu Orchestra, these roots show up in her songs as shades of classical, jazz and folk over a predominantly doo-wop canvas. Mana Maddy sings and plays piano or ukulele, backed by Mateo Lugo on electric guitar, Lewis Patzner on cello, Paul Martin on upright bass, Geneva Harrison on percussion and a rotating cast of backup vocalists.

8:30 – Far East Side
A post-ironic rock band from San Francisco employing a classic guitar sound made modern by dense harmonies rather than fuzz and synths, and bringing elements of hip hop and electronic dance music to the groove where Led Zeppelin drew inspiration from Motown. Rejecting the gluttony of the 80s, the self-awareness of the 90s, and the passing fads of today, Far East Side is proof that time is merely a social construct.
