Event Details

Come celebrate the passage of the new year at the Technicolor Zen Garden. Stationed outside the Asian Art Museum at the corner of Larkin and Fulton, this multi-sensory garden draws influence from scientific and cultural practices of mindfulness, meditation, and compassionate behavior.

Inspired by Japanese Zen Gardens, Ugo Rondinone’s Seven Magic Mountains and Stanford’s Center for Compassion Altruism Research and Education, this colorful 2,000+ sq. ft. enclosure will feature five unique activities including:

  • Vanishing Drawing Board
  • Breath Exercise
  • Zen-inspired Rake Garden
  • Tea Lounge (sponsored by the San Francisco Public Library)
  • Collaborative Photo Mural

And, while you’re in the area, be sure to check out the Asian Art Museum; it’s free that day, as is street parking (double, err… triple score).

Featuring local artists Ben Snyder and Marie Applegate.

The Art/Lit Living Innovation Zone is a new work of public sculpture developed as part of the Living Innovation Zone (LIZ) program. Designed by a team of youth in the Architecture Program at Youth Art Exchange, the students were inspired by dragons, a mythological creature found in the art and literature of many different cultures and time periods. Their dragon is decorated with a myriad of patterns found on artwork in the collections of the Asian Art Museum. Over the next two years, the intended life of the project, the sculpture and area around it will be programmed with activities and new mural openings.

Please note, due to non-heavy, non-stormy, but persistent and consistent rains the event has been postponed. It has been rescheduled to Sunday, February 5, 2017 from January 8th as originally posted. Please note, we don’t have a photo of the super cool sounding Technicolor Zen Garden, but expect the secret reveal to be colorful.
