Transportation History Geek-Out Bike Ride | Golden Gate Park

Join SF Bicycle Coalition co-founder, Joel Pomerantz, for a bike ride around Golden Gate Park to see the history of Transportation in San Francisco unfold from 10 am to 1 pm on Friday, March 6, 2015.

Free, but an RSVP is required. There is typically a hat passed around at the end if you are able to contribute donations.

Golden Gate park is a canvas on which the city’s ambitions were sketched. San Francisco was the first major city on the coast. Discover many firsts in the park because it was where ideas were tested. You’ll see where a major railroad came right into the park, where the suspension bridge was first tried, where driver licenses were invented, why pedestrians were so feared, and even learn about street sweeping.

This adventure will include great discussions between short stretches of riding. Highlights include: Brooklyn Bridge in SF, the Northwest Passage, building roads on sand dunes, echo tunnels, abandoned 12th-20th century castle, garage fight, elephant ambulance, and a mini Eiffel Tower.

Keep in mind: The ride is rain or shine. Bring your bike. This is not vigorous exercise, bring extra layers to keep warm. The ride ends within a few blocks of where they start. There’s a maximum 15 people, so RSVP early.

Joel was the first to popularize the Wiggle, was producer of the Duboce Bike Mural (lead artist: Mona Caron), and co-founded many bicycle transportation movement orgs.
