Event Details

WONDERFEST, is a two-day free Bay Area Festival of Science which takes place at Stanford and UC Berkeley.

This series of free public science dialogues between world class researchers in discussion of provocative scientific questions also features the Bay Area Science Expo where artists and craftspeople show their science stuff. No registration required.

Sunday’s Berkeley highlights include a lecture on scientists trying to engineer the Earth’s climate and – for some levity – the stand-up comedy act from “Earth’s Premier Science Comedian” Brian Malow!

Many of the events are 90-min affairs —  They are divided into 3 segments: 30 min of intro background remarks, 30 min of “debate,” and then 30 min of questions from the audience. That means you get to interact and placate scientists with your best wit and snarky comments.

The Schedule of Events (which are all FREE):

  • 10:00 am EMMY NOETHER: MISTRESS OF NATURE’S LAWS — Ransom Stephens, physicist and author
  • 10:30 am DARE WE TRY TO ENGINEER EARTH’S CLIMATE? Julio Friedmann, Carbon Management Program Leader, Lawrence Livermore National Lab & Jane C.S. Long, Associate Director at Large, Lawrence Livermore National Lab
  • Noon – 4:00 pm BAY AREA SCIENCE EXPO — Art, books, crafts & music for science lovers
  • 1:30 pm HOW DID EVOLUTION SHAPE HUMAN BEHAVIOR? David DeGusta, Research Paleontologist, Paleoanthropology Institute & Henry Gilbert, Assistant Professor of Anthropology, CSU East Bay
  • 3:00 pm SCIENCE LAUGHS — The comedy of Brian Malow, also a freelance science correspondent for TIME. Does a great Neil Armstrong routine.
  • 3:30 pm THIS WEEK IN SCIENCE — Live podcast with Dr. Kiki
  • 4:15pm DO WE UNDERSTAND THE STRUCTURE OF THE UNIVERSE?Chung-Pei Ma, Professor of Astronomy, UC Berkeley & Lloyd Knox, Professor of Physics, UC Davis
