From Haight-Ashbury to Compton and all the beaches and highways in between, the multitudes of California living have inspired some of the most legendary songs in music history.

The New York Times’ chief pop music critic Jon Pareles and our California Today correspondent Jill Cowan talk about the songs, artists and musical genres that emerged from California. They’ll also share their ultimate California playlist (will it line up with yours?) in this special event that will move from discussion to dance party.

Music and dance party provided by Noise Pop, established in San Francisco in 1993 and one of the nation’s leading independent music promoters, and Red Corvette, co-founder of Women Sound Off Festival.
