Centered around music for two violins and music for violin and piano, this concert by the Wooden Fish Ensemble is the occasion for two distinctive world premieres, both for violin duo – one by the Belgian iconoclast, Boudewijn Buckinx, the other by San Francisco’s own Hyo-shin Na. Works for violin paired with piano by two composers from the twentieth century, Satie and Arvo Pärt, provide an antidote to the largely mainstream sounds from that time. Finally, Frederic Rzewski’s masterful North American Ballads presents four American folk/labor/anti-war songs along with the models they are based on – two Organ Chorale-Preludes by Bach in arrangements for piano solo by Busoni.
