Event Details

Summer “Now Festival” 2018 | June 22-24

Come on out June 22-24, 2018 to co-create the best possible version of the panhandle community for one extraordinary week as the NOW Summer Festival takes over the neighborhoods around San Francisco’s iconic Panhandle (plus a few others all over the city).

Join in for free events like build-your-own-boat race, flowers crowns, and their always popular bonfire at Ocean Beach. Most of the events are free, however, some events ask for donations or have a low cover.

Get your “now” on during the kick-off day of this festival celebrating the Panhandle.

On opening day, you’ll take a polar bear plunge, groove to a silent disco (with live bands instead of DJs), hang poetry from trees, engage in a “stupid” parade and tons of other fun, strange and participatory events that are perfectly San Franciscan.

Sunday, November 16 – Event Schedule
All events are subject to change. Check their website first before attending.

Polar Bear Plunge (Free) – Ocean Beach Fire Pits | 8:00 – 9:00 am
Kick off the Now Festival by plunging into the water at Ocean Beach. What does this have to do with the Panhandle? There ain’t no stinkin’ beach in the Panhandle.

Story Forest (Set-up) (Free) – The Panhandle near McKinley Statue | 1:00 – 2:00 pm
We are all connected by our stories. The Story Forest will encourage participants to share a handwritten story and take a story. Select stories will be hung from trees in the Panhandle, creating a Story Forest where participants can immerse themselves in the stories of strangers.

Rooftop Yoga + Potluck (Donation-based) – Le Chateau McAlamo, 1052 Fulton St | 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
Rooftop yoga with a gorgeous view. What is a better way to spend your Sunday? I know- a potluck brunch.

St. Stupid’s Demo (Free) – McKinley Statue in the Panhandle | 12:00 – 2:00 pm
Saint Stupid (Ed Holmes of the San Francis Mime Troupe) will be teaching physical theater skills (improv & pantomiming) to the untrained masses. Wear strange, comfortable clothes and don’t take yourself seriously. Then there will be a parade. Don’t ask questions.

Slackline Workshop, pt.1 (Free) – Between Cole street and Clayton in the Panhandle, Northside, in the trees | 12:00 – 4:00 pm
It may look easy, but walking on a 2″ cord between two trees does take focus, determination, and a willingness to fall. Come out and those in the know give you a few pointers. Music will be provided by DJ bot.

Face-Painting Face-Off (Free) – Panhandle Playground Area | 1-2 pm
Think you’ve got face-painting skills? Pretty confident you can at least get brush to face? Come paint some faces and enter the competition. Everyone wins.

Live Band Silent Disco (donations for musicians appreciated) – Panhandle Playground Area | 1:30-3:30 pm
Come get your groove on at Silent Storm’s Silent Disco in Golden Gate Park. For those unfamiliar with silent disco, it’s like a dance party, but instead music is listened to on wireless headphones. They’ll have two live bands playing for one of the first live band silent discos ever.

Church of 8 Wheels Roller Disco (Free) – Skatin’ Place – 6th Ave and JFK Drive in Golden Gate Park | 1:00 – 6:00 pm
There is a place in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park that is heaven for Bay Area inline skaters and roller skaters who like to boogie to the funky beat on wheels.

Feed Your Mind (Free) – St. Cyprian’s Church | 5:30 – 7:30 pm
Come join two passionate healthy eaters/educators and pick up some savvy techniques in the kitchen and beyond.

Sunday Sessions at Madrone Art Bar (donations for musicians appreciated)) – Madrone Art Bar | 9:30-12 pm
Join organist Wil Blades for “Sunday Sessions” at Madrone with weekly guests for some straight jazz — no chaser.
