Friday Nights at the de Young | Fall 2018

One of San Francisco’s most celebrated after-hours museum events returns for a fall season of 2018.

These nine Friday Nights feature free admission to the main-level galleries highlighted by a reinterpretation of contemporary art in their permanent collection and new acquisitions called Specters of Disruption. In addition, Friday Nights will offer reduced-price tickets of $14 to the exhibition Contemporary Muslim Fashions from 6–8:30 pm.

Through social-media moments and in-person dialogue, visitors can engage and commune with the art and with one another in a warm and welcoming setting. Enjoy specialty drinks and mocktails, coffees, teas, and snacks. Bring your friends. Strike a pose at the selfie wall. Listen to music. Make art. Activities take place from 6–8:30 pm.

Founding member Hisham Mayet of legendary label Sublime Frequencies visits the de Young for a double header of rare and intimate sounds and images gathered from explorations around the world.

  • 6–7:30 pm: “Outernational” Music in Wilsey Court
  • 7:30–8:15 pm: Lecture and listening: Charles Duvelle – Disques OCORA in Piazzoni Murals Room

First, Mayet DJs a mix of international folk and pop music gathered in both urban and rural frontiers from his extensive music collection gathered throughout travels and explorations in Southeast Asia, North Africa, West Africa, and the Middle East. With releases like “Choubi Choubi: Folk and pop sounds from Iraq” and “Radio Niger,” the label’s work in archiving and field recording “outernational” creative practice through a kind of punk ethnomusicology is characterized by an embrace of traditional and innovative forms of performance and other human expression.

After, Mayet will lecture and share images and sounds from his latest project based on in-depth collaboration with pioneering composer and musicologist Charles Duvelle.

Mayet will speak about his research on Duvelle, assembled into a limited edition publication, exhaustive and richly illustrated, that collects field recordings and field photography and an extensive interview between Mayet and Duvelle. The Photographs of Charles Duvelle: Disques OCORA and Collection PROPHET will be available for sale in the de Young store.
