Event Details

Join the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band on a musical quest through J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth, as Dr. Martin H. Seggelke conducts them in a performance of Johan de Meij’s Symphony No. 1 Lord of the Rings.

Conducting is Dr. Martin Seggelke, a candidate for Artistic Director of the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band. Known for his expressive musical interpretations, Dr. Seggelke serves as Director of Wind Ensembles and leads the Master of Music program in Wind Conducting at San Francisco State University.

Johan de Meij’s first symphony, Lord of the Rings is unusual because it was written originally for symphonic wind ensemble rather than orchestra in 1989.

An orchestral transcription was arranged and premiered in 2001 to coincide with the release of the first film of Peter Jackson’s Oscar-winning film trilogy, based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s famous book trilogy of the same title.
