SFMOMA: Free Community Day in Celebration of Pride Month

Top Pick

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) kicks off its summer calendar of exhibitions, events and programs with two exciting, free community experiences. To celebrate Pride Month, SFMOMA will be free and open to all on Saturday, June 29. Discover seven gallery floors of art, including awe-inspiring works by LGBTQ+ artists. Among the exhibitions currently on view are Zanele Muholi: Eye MeArt of Noise and Creative Growth: The House That Art Built.

Kara Walker’s Fortuna and the Immortality Garden (Machine)*, located in the museum’s free ground floor Roberts Family Gallery, will open to the public starting at 10 a.m. on July 1, with a special community opening reception to follow from 4–6 p.m. that day. The fascinating installation is Walker’s most ambitious public project to date and features a field of automatons trapped in a never-ending cycle of ritual and struggle. Situated within an energetically charged field of black obsidian from Mt. Konocti in Lake County, California—a volcanic glass with deep spiritual properties—Walker’s automatons evoke wonder, reflection, respite, and hope. This free public opening reception will include a cash bar.
