7pm – 8pm

Contemporary artist, Xu Tan introduces his new project, Social Botany and will discuss the shift from his previous community engaged work, Chinatown Keywords School organized in collaboration with the Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco (CCCSF) and Chinatown Community Development Center in 2013 and 2014. Both projects belong to the artist to a larger body of work called Keywords Laboratory which began in 2005 and has been carried out in many locations across the world. The CCCSF presents the San Francisco edition ofSocial Botany, through which Xu Tan will invite several social activists/artists, mostly Chinese American who employ the medium of art as a tool to empower the underestimated voices, and collaborate with them to co-produce their own solo exhibitions and workshops at 41 Ross from September to November, 2016. The exhibition series will be an extension of the dialogue between Xu Tan, social activists/artists and the curator into the space via personal archives suggested in dialogue format.
Born in Wuhan, China, in 1957, artist Xu Tan currently lives and works in China and the United States. He studied at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and joined the influential experimental art team Big Tail Elephant Group in the 1990s. Xu Tan is a recipient of a fellowship of the Asian Cultural Council from the Rockefeller Foundation and the co-director of HB Station in Guangzhou, China. Since 2013, Xu Tan has been the artist-in-residence at the Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco for Chinatown Keywords School and Social Botany Project, which will be on view at 41 Ross (a pop-up community arts space) from September through December. He has exhibited worldwide, including the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco; Venice Biennale, Italy; Berlin Biennale, Germany; and Today Art Museum, China.
