The 1st Ever “Bay Day”

It’s like Earth Day, but just for the Bay Area – and it takes place Saturday

Bay Day is like Earth Day – for San Francisco Bay. It is one official day every year for the entire Bay Area to come together and celebrate the Bay.

Don’t be fooled by the bridges, levees, and city skylines—the Bay is wild and alive. In fact, it’s the largest and most ecologically important estuary on the West Coast. When we take one day each year to celebrate this amazing natural resource, the movement to preserve and protect it for future generations grows stronger.

All over San Francisco Bay
Most events are FREE, but other venues will offer special or discounted activities.

Dozens of community partners in every part of the Bay will host celebrations, lead special programs, or offer special discounts for the public.

2016 free highlights:

San Francisco

  • 11am – 1pm: Group Bike Ride with SF Bike Coalition
  • 8am – 12pm: Swim Across America with Baykeeper (Swimmers raise funds, spectators watch for free)
  • 10:30am – 4:30pm: Reusable Bag Crafts at the Sea Lion Center
  • 1pm – 3pm: Coastal Cleanup at Heron’s Head Park
  • 1pm – 4pm: Bean Sprouts Family Day at the San Francisco Botanical Garden

East Bay

  • 2pm – 4pm: Warning, Warning & Watermark Film Screening at David Brower Center
  • 3:30pm – 5:00pm: Berkeley Group Bike Ride with Bike East Bay
  • 10:30am – 1:30pm: Group Bike Ride in San Leandro with Bike East Bay
  • 9am – 12pm: Wetland Restoration with Save The Bay
  • 11am – 4pm: North Richmond Shoreline Open Space Alliance Festival
  • 2pm – 3pm: East Bay Regional Park District: Family Nature Fun at Crab Cove
  • 10am – 12pm: Healthy Parks, Healthy People Walk at MLK Regional Shoreline

North Bay

  • 9am – 11:30am: Paddle the Benicia Water Trail
    The Benicia Outrigger Canoe Club will be providing free canoe rides and Benicia Kite & Paddle Sports will be offering free stand up paddleboard sessions and kite board equipment demonstrations (waivers required, equipment provided).
  • 9am: Bike the Bay – Ridge Trail’s Carquinez Scenic Loop
  • 10am – 12:30pm: Walking Tour around the Bay Model
  • 10am – 12pm: Sonoma Land Trust: Sears Point Tidal Marsh Docent-Led Walk
  • 9am – 10am: Adapting to Sea Level Rise in the Bay with Roger Leventhal and Sonoma Land Trust
  • 11am – 4pm: Napa Valley Museum’s Oktoberfest Celebration
  • 10am – 5pm: Marine Mammal Center: Tours and Free Admission (Free, but docent tours are $9 for adults, $5 for students/seniors)

Peninsula & South Bay

  • 10am – 11am: Inner Bair Island Bay Day Walk
  • 11am: Sloughkeepers Paddle and Cleanup of Alviso Slough
  • 10:30am – 11:30am: Bay Day Bike Ride at Don Edwards Wildlife Refuge
  • 10am – 11am: Bay Day Litter Poster Making at Don Edwards Wildlife Refuge
  • 10am – 5pm: Free Admission at CuriOdyssey
  • 10:30am – 1:30pm: Group Bike Ride with Silicon Valley Bike Coalition
  • 9am – 12pm: Wetland Restoration with Save The Bay
  • 10am – 12pm: Wisdom of the Watershed Docent-Led Hike at Picchetti Ranch Open Space Preserve
  • 2pm – 4pm: Climate Change and the Bay Hike at Ravenswood Open Space Preserve
  • 12pm – 4pm: “Walking The Bay 2” Photography Exhibit
  • 9:30am – 10:45am: Bay Trail Walk
  • 9:30am – 10:30am: Tai Chi at the Refuge
