The Afro-Latinx Festival aims to bring together the community to celebrate the creative feats of Latin American musical traditions rooted in the African diaspora. The festivities will take place at the Bayview Opera House’s outdoor stage in a TARDEADA.

Chuchito Valdés

Chuchito Valdés, following in the footsteps of his famed father Chucho Valdés and grandfather Bebo Valdés, continues the legacy of great piano players from Cuba. Chuchito is recognized as a master of Cuban music including Son, Danzon, Cuban Timba and Guaguanco. He has also extensively studied classical music including harmony and composition. His original compositions and arrangements draw on classical harmonic and structural techniques. In his performances, Chuchito’s music draws on many styles including Afro-Cuban Latin Jazz, Bebop, Danzón, Cha-Cha-Cha, Son Montuno and much more. Chuchito Valdés currently resides in Cancun, Mexico and is a frequent performer in the United State and Canada.

Roberto Borrell – African Batá Drum Master

Roberto learned traditional and popular Afro-Cuban dance, percussion, and song from master musicians and dancers while growing up in La Havana Vieja, Havana, Cuba. He is a respected dancer and percussionist of Afro-Cuban Yoruba, Abakua (Calabar), Rumba, Arará (Dahony), and Palo (Congo). He also a master dancer and teacher of Cuban popular dance styles such as son montuno, danzón, and cha cha cha.

BDT – Bolivian Dance Team / Espíritu Andino

A Bay Area dance group performing Afro-South American dances.
BDT is a San Jose based organization that celebrates Bolivia’s rich and varied cultures re-creating Bolivian dances by taking on innovative approaches to ancient and rare traditions. Directed by Jacqueline Gumucio and Dexter Fernandez, BDT first came together in 2016 and has since performed at Worlds Arts West’s SF Ethnic Dance Festival, the International Children’s Festival in San Jose, San Francisco’s Carnaval, Dance Mission Theatre’s Winter Choreographers Festival, and more. Though BDT continuously dances the Popular “Bolivian” folklore of today, they also carry in their hearts and minds a discerned effort of striving to find the original history, melodies and movements of the dances from our ancestors to preserve, protect, discover and spread awareness of the cultural variety that comprises Bolivia.

DJ Leydis was born and raised in Cuba. Involved in the Cuban HIP HOP movement since it’s inception, DJ Leydis helped organized some of Cuba’s most respected and attended events and community programs. She moved to the USA in 2006.

Claudio Talavera-Ballon

Talavera-Ballón is a Peruvian-born painter based in San Francisco, CA. His work highlights the lives and struggles of farm workers, indigenous people and immigrants throughout Latin America and the USA. His art exhibit, “Mujeres Luz”, will be on display during the event.
