The annual free Yehudi Menuhin Chamber Music Seminar and Festival takes place at SF State from Thursday, February 13, 2014 – Sunday, February 16, 2014.

Free, but tickets are required.

This special event incorporates concerts and a seminar for ensembles of all ages, advancing the belief that music has the power to create understanding and transcend differences between people.

Concerts take place at the Creative Arts Building, Knuth Hall.

2014 Free Concert Schedule

February 14 | 8 pm

  • Schubert (1797–1828): Rondo for Violin and Strings in A major, D. 438 (1816), performed by the Alexander String Quartet and Jackie Ross, violin solo
  • Schubert: Piano Trio in E-flat major, D. 897 Notturno (1828), performed by Trio Consonare
  • Bartók (1923–1945): String Quartet No. 4, Sz. 91 (1928), performed by NYX String Quartet
  • Intermission
  • Schubert: String Quintet in C major, D. 956 (1828), performed by Alexander String Quartet with David Requiro, cello

February 15 | 8 pm

  • Schubert: Sonata in A minor for Arpeggione and Piano, D. 821 (1824), performed by Toby Appel, viola, and Laura Dahl, piano
  • Beethoven (1770–1827): Piano Trio in D major, Op. 70, No. 1 Ghost (1808), performed by Aleron Trio
  • Intermission
  • Schubert: Lieder Set, performed by Christine Brandes, soprano, and Laura Dahl, piano
  • Schubert: Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667 (1819), performed by Sarah Cahill, piano; Jackie Ross, violin; Toby Appel, viola; David Requiro, cello; and Shinji Eshima, bass

February 16 | 7 pm

The final gala concert, featuring performances of seminar participants and the announcement of the Galante Prize. Some of the outstanding ensembles applying to join the seminar hail from as far afield as London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the Glenn Gould School at Toronto’s Royal Conservatory and New York’s The Juilliard School.
