Author Amy Tan joins KQED veteran and literature professor Michael Krasny for a conversation on how personal and cultural histories fuse with imagination in her writing.\

Born to Chinese immigrant parents in Oakland, California in 1952, Tan’s upbringing, complex family experiences, and cultural heritage have been an inexhaustible well of creative inspiration, while the wit and tenderness of her writing has made her a global literary icon.

Tan’s novels include “The Joy Luck Club”, “The Kitchen God’s Wife”, “The Hundred Secret Senses”, “The Bonesetter’s Daughter”, “Saving Fish from Drowning”, and “The Valley of Amazement”, all New York Times bestsellers. She is also the author of a memoir, a book about writing, two children’s books, and numerous articles and short stories. Her work has been nominated for the National Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the International Orange Prize, and she has won many awards including the Commonwealth Gold Award and the F. Scott Fitzgerald Award for Achievement in American Literature. Her essays and stories are found in hundreds of anthologies and textbooks. Her work has been translated into 35 languages.

She is also the subject of the recent documentary “Amy Tan: Unintended Memoir”, which debuted at Sundance in January 2021 and aired as part of PBS’s American Masters series.
