CHRISTIANE CEGAVSKE’S STOP-MOTION ANIMATED FEATURE BLOOD TEA AND RED STRING WITH DIRECTOR Q&A AND ARTIST TALK
About this Event:
Blood Tea and Red String is a handmade stop-motion fairy tale for adults created by Christiane Cegavske with music by Bay Area musician Mark Growden. Critics called it “a David Lynchean fever dream on Beatrix Potter terrain…close in macabre spirit to the original versions of many classic fables” (Variety); “as much a work of sculpture as of cinema” (The New York Times) and “An animal fable both dark and explicitly feminist in its mission….Cegavske’s creative magic explodes on the screen.” (Fangoria).
Blood Tea and Red String tells a Grimms-like morality tale of anthropomorphic, aristocratic white mice who commission gentle oak dwelling artisans to create a doll for them. When the Oak Dwellers fall in love with the doll they refuse to give her up. Resorting to thievery, the jilted mice abscond with her in the middle of the night. The Oak Dwellers must journey through their mystical and dangerous land to reclaim their love.
There will be director Q&A and artist talk by Cegavske following the screening.
This screening is in conjunction with Cegavske’s Cottonflesh Sacrifice art show and immersive installation at UMA Gallery Oakland.
Cottonflesh Sacrifice is a multimedia collection of artwork by 2019 John Simon Guggenheim Fellow and San Francisco Art Institute alumna Christiane Cegavske. The show features an immersive installation that includes Cegavske’s stop-motion animated projections, life-size dolls, and a musical soundscape by Karie Jacobson and Drew Kowalski of the Dagons.
