‘Memories to Light’ is an outdoor screening of Asian American home movies accompanied by a live, original score from local musicians Danny Clay and Theresa Wong. Co-produced by McEvoy Foundation for the Arts and the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM), this event takes place ??on Saturday October 23 at Willie “Woo Woo” Wong Playground during an urban festival of light and sound that celebrates San Francisco’s historic Chinatown. ‘Memories to Light’ is free with no registration required.

The digitized 8mm and 16mm films in ‘Memories to Light,’ an ongoing project by CAAM, capture extraordinary scenes of ordinary Asian American life from the 1960s through the present. Clay and Wong’s harmonious compositions bridge field recordings, spoken word, and improvisational techniques to conjure an immersive physical space filled by the power of performance and the possibility of togetherness.

CAAM has been dedicated for 40 years to presenting stories that convey the richness and diversity of Asian American experiences. As a nonprofit organization, CAAM funds, produces, distributes, and exhibits works in film, television, and digital media. CAAMFest, formerly the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival (SFIAAFF), celebrates the world’s largest showcase for new Asian American and Asian film, food, and music programs.

‘Memories to Light’ is one of several live events organized by McEvoy Arts that amplify the themes of its current exhibit ‘Next to You,’ on view through December 4, 2021. Featuring artworks from the McEvoy Family Collection, ‘Next to You’ celebrates the joy, vitality, and healing power of the performing arts. Also on view is ‘Hearing Aids,’ a daily screening program of short films guest curated by visual artist and filmmaker Alison O’Daniel, that explores expansive understandings of sound and listening. Admission to McEvoy Arts is free.
