2,000-Year-Old Redwoods Survive Fire at Big Basin
Thanks to NBC Bay Area for letting us know that despite initial headlines claiming Big Basin was “gone,” most of the ancient redwoods in California’s oldest state park have withstood the fires and survived.
“The reason those trees are so old is because they are really resilient” – State Parks District Superintendent Chris Spohrer

Despite initial fears that most of the old growth forest was destroyed, an Associated Press photographer and reporter hiked through Big Basin and confirmed that much of the ancient redwood forest survived.
“Ever notice that old-growth redwoods in Big Basin and other parks have fire scars on them? They’ve been through multiple fires, possibly worse than this. The forest is not gone, and it will regrow. While there is a great deal of work to be done rebuilding campgrounds, clearing trails and managing damaged madrones, oaks and firs, Big Basin will recover” – Sempervirens Fund
