Now in its 41st year, the San Francisco Free Folk Festival celebrates folk music and dance through free concerts and workshops from all over the world. Think of it as “Hardly Strictly,” but without the sunburn or the claustrophobia.

New for this year, there will be a full-day storytelling program presented by the Storytelling Association of California.

The festival celebrates the folk community with a full day of music and dance workshops, concerts, crafts, vendors, and fun for the whole family. All ages and musical interests are welcome. All events and workshops are open to anyone who wants to drop in and participate or just listen.

Highlights of the festival include: Improv Theater, “Swing That Uke,” “Dancing with Jane Austen,” Klezmer Dance, Clogging, Balkan Dancing, “Dilemma Stories for Democracy,” “Broadside Ballads of Political Reform,” “Sea Chanties / Songs of the Sea,” “Folk Songs of Women’s Resistance,” “Dances of Universal Peace,” “Learn to Sing Barbershop Harmony,” and “Tricksters!”

New for 2017, the festival is hosting the first ever Bay Area Liars Competition where talented wordsmiths will have 5 minutes each to tell their best, their boldest, their funniest and most outlandish lies.
