The annual Lyrid meteor shower lasts from about April 16 to 25. About 10 to 15 meteors per hour can be expected around the shower’s peak, in a dark sky.
In 2020, the peak viewing hours is expected to take place in the dark hours before dawn April 22, with no moon to ruin the show.
This shower comes after a months-long meteor drought between early January and April.
And although typically Lyrids has 10-15 meteors/hr at its peak, it has been known for occasional surges that can sometimes bring the rate up to 100 per hour. Those rare outbursts aren’t easy to predict, but they’re one of the reasons the Lyrids are worth checking out if you can find a dark place away from city lights
