Which Bay Area Beaches are Open/Closed Labor Day Weekend?
Thanks to SF Gate for compiling a county-by-county list of which beaches are open (or closed) over the Labor Day weekend.
Please note that details can change quickly so please check with your county first before heading out to make sure. When beach parking lots are full, police will close down vehicle access to the areas. Visit @GGNRANPSAlerts for updates.
Labor Day Weekend 2020 Beach Status
- San Francisco – All beaches open. Parking lots are open, but all picnic areas and Ocean Beach firepits are closed.
– UPDATE – On September 6th, Mayor Breed announced that Ocean Beach parking lot would be closed after a large Burning Man inspired event on Saturday night drew 1,000. The mayor did not give a timetable as to the length of the closure.- Alameda County / East Bay Regional Parks District – Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach in Alameda is open, but McKay Parking Lot is closed. More details on other parks and trails.
- Marin County – All beaches open except Point Reyes National Seashore (closed due to the Woodward Fire). All picnic areas and beach parking open except for the Kirby Cove Day Use Area and Muir Beach fire pits are closed.
- San Mateo County – All beaches open except for Pacifica (parking lots closed Sept 5-8). Coastal Trail, Mori Point hiking trails, Beach Boulevard Promenade, and Pacifica Pier remain open. No vehicle parking is allowed in community areas.
- Santa Cruz County – For most of the weekend (through 5am on Tuesday), sunbathing, beach walks, sitting on the sand and congregating on the beach is prohibited. Surfing, paddle-boarding, boogie-boarding, swimming, snorkeling and kayaking are allowed. You are allowed to walk across the sand towards your water activity. Beaches will be open for all uses (including sunbathing and beach walks) 4-8pm on Saturday and Sunday, September 5-6.
- Sonoma County – All beaches open

Should You Avoid the Beach this Weekend?
Regardless of the fact that most of the beaches are open, there are certainly some concerns about large gatherings this weekend, especially during a heatwave. Whatever you choose to do, we hope that you wear a mask and socially-distance as much as is possible.
