Bay Area Trying to be FIFA World Cup Host Site in 2026
Bay Area politicians and business leaders later this week are hosting international soccer officials on a tour of Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara as part of the region’s bid to be a host for the 2026 World Cup.
The soccer governing body FIFA is coming to the Bay Area on Friday and Saturday and will be greeted by a delegation that includes the mayors of San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose as well as the San Francisco 49ers, who play at Levi’s Stadium, and leaders from big businesses in the region like Google, Salesforce and Visa.
The men’s World Cup in 2026 is being hosted across 16 locations in North America, and the Bay Area is one of the 22 locations still under consideration, with the selections set to be announced early next year, according to the 49ers, who issued a news release Wednesday about the planned FIFA visit.
The Bay Area hosted men’s World Cup matches in 1994 and the 1999 women’s World Cup semifinal. Find more details about the region’s bid for the 2026 tournament.
