15+ Broadway Shows to Watch Online & Where to Find Them
Never fear, Broadway is here! Just because you’re locked up indoors due a coronavirus time-out, doesn’t mean you can’t watch some of your beloved musicals and plays online that were filmed live on stage.
BroadwayHD / 7-Day Free Trial
If you’re a big theater buff, there’s a dedicated streaming service just for you, so you can sing your heart out at home (quietly, if you have roommates). Take advantage of the 7-day free trial of BroadwayHD and go nuts binging all the musicals you can belt out before the $8.99 monthly fee kicks. BroadwayHD features about 300 productions with titles like 42nd Street, Kinky Boots, Miss Saigon, Sweeney Todd, Les Miserables and even Cats (the real awesome Broadway version, not that insane movie version from 2019 where they had to airbrush out their buttholes). – Sign up for BroadwayHD 7-day free trial
Filmed On Stage / Where to Watch & Rent
BroadwayHD doesn’t have everything, so if you have a particular show you want to watch (and don’t mind paying to rent it) then check out Filmed On Stage which in addition to a huge library of rentable musicals, has a growing list of free musicals and plays you can watch online – but the free titles are more “deep cuts” for the hardcore Broadway fan.
Stars in the House / Daily Live Streams
One other alternative for theater fans which showcases big stars but with a DIY-at-home feel, is “Stars in the House.” The Actors Fund is producing mini-Broadway shows online every day at 11am and 5pm (pacific time) with stars like Sara Bareilles, Idina Menzel, Kristin Chenoweth and many more. Between each song SiriusXM Broadway host Seth Rudetsky will interview each star giving you fun, inside stories about their careers. The shows are free, but your donations go a long way.
