SF Has Lowest COVID Death Rate of Any Major U.S. City
Thanks to SFGATE for letting us know why SF has the lowest COVID-19 death rate of any other major city.
Dr. Bob Wachter, the Chairman of UCSF Dept of Medicine shared the latest chart of the Morbidity and mortality from Covid-19 in selected cities from the United States.
The chart shows that SF has the second-lowest number of Covid-19 cases (with Seattle as the lowest) and lowest death rate by a large margin – 9.7 per 100,000 people and 0.87% death per case rate – compared to other major cities in the US.

According to Dr. Wachter, “The low case rate is a result of people acting well, and acting well is everything from city health leaders doing the right thing to the people doing the right thing.” He added that the very high rates of mask-wearing, probably the highest in the country is also a major contributing factor.
He thinks from the beginning people have trusted the science, trusted the guidance. San Franciscans have generally taken this very seriously and he feels the leadership from the mayor and the regional health directors has been terrific.
