Event Details

Celebrating those who have passed on, this year’s altar or ofrenda, is dedicated to fallen cyclists in the hope of raising awareness about bicycle safety.

The bicycle altar is a mobile diorama that includes sculls made from bike parts, flowers, mounted electrical candles, stands for the community’s candles, battery operated lights, a cork board interior for memorial pictures of fallen cyclists, holographic displays of vintage bike races and historic international bicycling moments. In addition, the community may bring photos of their loved ones, candles, breads, or flowers to add to the altar.

Costume Contest: A contest for the best grown up Dia de los Muertos costume, papier mache head, or best-decorated bicycle will be awarded at 7:30PM.  A children’s Halloween costume contest will be held earlier in the week on Halloween, Oct. 31, 4PM at Epicurious Gardens, 1511 Shattuck Ave.

Candlelight Procession: After the judging, everyone in costume or masks, is invited to walk in a sidewalk candle light procession through the district for about an hour following along a path of strewn marigold petals and strolling to the sounds of serenading guitarists.

Ghoulish Menus: Gourmet Ghetto restaurants will create a special Ghoulish Gastronomique menu that will be served from Thursday, October 28 through Tuesday, November 2 for the entire Halloween/Dia de los Muertos weekend. You may find deviled chicken, one-eyed monster pizza, creepy crepes, or ghoul’s eye soup on their menus.

Free Bicycle Parking: Richmond Spokes will provide free bicycle parking or you may take BART and walk north six blocks.
