CANCELED: East Bay Burner Social | Oakland

> EVENT UPDATE: This event is no longer taking place.

East Bay Burners are a group of Burning Man devotees who all live around the East Bay and get together monthly to talk, exchange ideas, teach, learn and have fun.

The East Bay Burner Social takes place monthly in the run-up to the festival and features a different speaker or topic of discussion each time. The group is a great way to meet new Playa friends, or if you’re a beginner, to figure out what Burning Man is all about.

The East Bay Burner Socials are family friendly (kids welcome) wheelchair accessible, and to facilitate discourse, don’t have loud music.

Laura Kimpton, creator of many huge and well loved installations on the playa, will be the special guest at the May’s East Bay Burner Social.

Free, but an RSVP is required.

Laura is an artist, teacher and engaging speaker with many fun and enlightening stories drawn from her 10 years of bringing big words and big art to Burning Man. Laura will also announce her creation for this year’s Burn.

You’ll also hear from:

  • David Vernon (a/k/a Wonder Dave), an 11 year burner who will announce his forthcoming Burning Man play, The Man Burns. Wonder Dave is an accomplished writer of film, fiction and essays who’s work includes the screenplay, “The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Green” which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, was released in theaters and is now available on Netflix. Dave will discuss the play and the challenges of transforming Burning Man into a theatrical experience.
  • Kat Parkin who will announce this year’s Berkeley Spark, a festival of art, music, performance and dance inspired by Burning Man’s culture and Ten Principles.
  • Edward Schocker of Thingamajigs will give a sneak peek to Aeolian Day, an Oakland based festival of musical instruments that are played by the wind. Aeolian Day takes place Saturday, May 17, 2014 at Middle Harbor Shoreline Park in Oakland and features instruments built in a collaboration of local artists and Oakland elementary schools.

Come hungry and feast on delicious soup, salad and bread from the Burning Soup Kitchen. $10 suggested donation gets you well fed and supports playa art.

Beginner? Come early to the special beginner’s Burning Man workshop taught by two veteran Burners.
