Urban hike leader extraordinaire, Jill Katz, invites you along on a 6 mile end-to-end hike of Golden Gate park where you’ll encounter ponds, lakes, flowers, an observation tower, happen upon the famous buffalos, gawk at the windmills, find a place to grab a beer and finally end up at a bonfire on Ocean Beach. Who can say no to this amazing adventure?
Meet at the Golden Gate Park entrance at Haight/Stanyan (right across the street from Whole Foods). Hike through the park exploring Lily Pond, Dahlias, Stow Lake, Strawberry Hill, and the top of the deYoung observatory, before proceeding to Middle Lake and the buffalo, until you finally end at the Windmills of the Great Highway and the ocean. (Here you can choose to take the N-Judah back to the starting point if you wish).
Staying for the bonfire? There is a Safeway nearby to grab a snack and then you can bring your food and drinks back to the beach for a bonfire. (If it is a Spare The Air day, they will go to the Beach Chalet Brewery for an after-hike beverage.)
Jill is looking for a volunteer to save a space at Ocean Beach while she grabs firewood, otherwise the group will have to take its chances.
Things to keep in mind: As you know, you will experience every microclimate possible. It’s September in Golden Gate Park after all, so wear a jacket. Hike is cancelled if it rains sideways. This is a one-way hike. No doggies please.
