Event Details

DIESEL, A Bookstore in Oakland is pleased to announce a new series, Escape From Reality: Freud’s Bar. The topic of this first meeting will be In Search of a Plausible Self: The Poetry of Louise Gluck, on Wednesday, October 7th at 6:30pm. It will be presented by Jeanne C. Harasemovitch, LCSW.

Are you interested in the world of Psychology and what “Escape From Reality” means, but afraid you may not understand all of the terms and jargon? Join them for monthly talks given by local Bay Area psychoanalysts aimed at students ages 16-25, while enjoying drinks and snacks. You don’t need to be a psychologist to check out their new program, Escape From Reality: Freud’s Bar, just bring your interest and a friend.

Louise Gluck’s poetry and prose traverse her struggle with anorexia and her journey “in search of a plausible self.” They’ll follow her writing, her entry into psychoanalysis, and join Gluck as she discovers that the self is not fixed, is forever shifting, and what is still unborn yearns to live in the world.

In an autobiographical essay entitled Education of the Poet, featured in Proofs and Theories, Louise Gluck tells everyone that at age 17, weighing 75 pounds and starving, she entered psychoanalysis, where she learned she was the source of her dreams, ideas, and embodied conflicts. Following her “lifework,” you’ll uncover how an arrested form – “a plausible self” – is transformed into the fullness of a poet whose poems awaken sensuous immediacy, arouse tension, induce reflection, and demand you unearth an always approximate truth.
