Celebrate the art of Faith Ringgold with the African American Quilt Guild of Oakland by participating in a guided quilting workshop and drop-in family art-making activity.

Schedule:
Family Art-Making
Location: Wilsey Court
11 am to 3 pm
Explore your creativity by making a small fabric “painting” to tell a story or convey an idea or experience that is important to you.

Making a Nine-Patch Quilt
Location: Hamon Tower, 8th floor
1 to 3 pm
Learn to make your own mini quilt in this guided workshop. Design, hand sew, and hand quilt a nine-patch quilt.
This program is part of a three-part series led by the African American Quilt Guild of Oakland inspired by the art of Faith Ringgold and her experimental story quilts.

Series dates: August 13, September 10, October 8.

About the African American Quilt Guild of Oakland
The African American Quilt Guild of Oakland formed in 2000 to focus on traditional African American quilt making. Over the years, the guild’s membership has grown to reflect the ethnic makeup of Oakland and practices have evolved to encompass every quilting style.

About the exhibition
Bringing together fifty years of work, Faith Ringgold: American People is the most comprehensive exhibition to date of Faith Ringgold’s groundbreaking vision. Featuring works from across Ringgold’s best-known series, this show tracks the development of her figurative style as it evolved to meet the urgency of political and social change. Throughout her career, Ringgold has drawn from personal and collective histories to both document her life and amplify the struggles for justice and equity. From creating some of the most indelible artworks of the civil rights era to challenging accepted hierarchies of art versus craft through her experimental story quilts, Ringgold has produced a body of work that bears witness to the complexity of the American experience. Long overdue, this retrospective provides a timely opportunity to engage with the art of an American icon.

Masking is strongly recommended, but no longer required for members of the public or employees while in the museum.

Ticket Information

The quilting workshop is limited to 20 participants, ages 12 and up. All pre-registration workshop spots have been reserved. Tickets will be released to walk-ins starting at 1:10 pm.

This public program is free and open to the public. Every Saturday, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco offers free general admission to all residents of the six Bay Area counties, this excludes special exhibitions.
