Free San Francisco Chamber Orchestra Concerts

Founded in 1953, the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra has remained an active voice in the Bay Area music community, presenting free concerts with an ensemble of the region’s top professional musicians.

The rollout of an exciting new concert format, Maestro Ben Simon becomes your host for a 90-minute, no intermission podcast. Think of it as a cross between Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me and From the Top with games, prizes, Ben’s famous trivia quiz, and of course, great music.

Featuring a host of SFCO All-Stars, this engaging program will feature variations on familiar themes by Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, and more. With special guest Anthony Lane, luthier.

Free admission. Members entry one hour before. General audience entry 15 minutes before. Recommended for middle school-age and up.

Fewer Players, Same Great (Musical) Taste: Gustav Mahler Symphony No. 4 (arr. Simon)
Benjamin Simon, conductor
Christine Brandes, soprano

Renowned Bay Area soprano Christine Brandes (“Earthy and affecting… magnificent” —NY Times) makes her SFCO debut in three very special performances of Mahler’s Fourth Symphony. Klaus Simon’s beautiful 2007 chamber arrangement for 14 players brings out the intimacy of this heavenly piece without sacrificing any of its power. This program will begin with a guided tour of this complex score, wherein Maestro Simon and the orchestra reveal its secrets and bring listeners into Mahler’s imaginative “sound world,” followed by a complete performance of this 55-minute work.

Classical masterpieces, unusual gems, and modern works offer a feast for your ears at every concert, while Ben Simon’s engaging onstage talks help you connect more powerfully with the music.

Admission is free to all. Supporting members receive priority seating and priority entrance 60 minutes before concert time. Please bring your membership card with you. General seating begins 45 minutes before concert time.
