Event Details

Garrard Conley’s memoir Boy Erased is about growing up as the son of a Baptist pastor in small-town Arkansas where he was terrified and conflicted about his sexuality. At nineteen he was sent to Love in Action, the largest “ex-gay” therapy organization in the country. Through an institutionalized Twelve-Step Program based heavy on Bible study, he was supposed to emerge heterosexual, ex-gay, cleansed of impure urges and stronger in his faith. Terrorizing and brutal, Love in Action tried to change everything about him even the way he walked and talked. Boy Erased is about family, faith, and community, and Conley’s search for identity.
