Photomatica, a San Francisco company renowned for reviving the magic of vintage photo booths, is launching a fun new venture in San Francisco – opening a brand new “Photo Booth Museum” on Thursday, December 12th, 2024.

This isn’t your ordinary museum. Sure, it will be filled with historic analog photo booths, some dating back to the 1930s, but it promises to be much more. Think of it as a celebration of all things photo booth – a place to step back in time, capture some fun memories with friends, and learn a little bit about the history of these quirky contraptions.

The Grand Opening party kicks off at 5 pm and runs until 9 pm. Entry is free and there will be free photo strips (while supplies last) in some of their vintage photo booths and free booze, too!

Photo Booth Museum Grand Opening
Thursday, December 12, 2024 | 5-9p
2275 Market Street (btwn Noe and Sanchez), SF
Free to visit, Photo strips cost $6.50-$7.50 (but free photo strips on opening night, while supplies last)

Going forward, according to Google, Photo Booth Museum will be open from 11a-7p every day.

Matt and Doug, the owners of Photomatica, have been passionate about photo booths for over 13 years. They’ve been collecting these vintage machines and seeing the joy they bring to people at events throughout the Bay Area. Their new shop, located at 2275 Market Street between Noe and Sanchez, is the culmination of their dream.

They had an original 1960 Auto-Photo Model 14 analog booth at Photoworks next door, but because of capacity issues had to leave the space. And when the next-door spot became available, they jumped on it.

“The Photo Booth Museum by Photomatica is a celebration of photo booth history and culture, showcasing fully functional analog booths alongside artifacts and relics that chronicle the evolution of this beloved art form. It’s a space where nostalgia meets innovation, offering visitors a hands-on journey through the timeless charm and artistry of photo booths”

Whether it’s a true museum experience with curated exhibits or a more interactive space remains to be seen. One thing is for sure; it will be a place to experience the magic of these analog photo booths. Visitors can expect to see a variety of booths, some with the classic chemical photo processing and others with a vintage-inspired digital print.

While most machines produce the typical 4 pose strips, the museum also features a new one-of-kind “x-tra wide” analog photo strip with three larger photos.

Although the signs on some of the machines still say “4 poses for 25 cents” or “4 poses, 3 minutes 50 cents” – those signs and prices are vintage relics. The price for photo strips these days will range from $6.50 to $7.50 depending on the machine.

In an age dominated by digital photography, Photomatica’s celebration of the analog photo booth feels refreshingly unique. There’s something undeniably special about the anticipation of waiting for your photo strip to develop, the joy of holding a tangible piece of memory in your hands.

Photomatica isn’t just about celebrating the past; they’re also looking to the future. The new shop will serve as a showroom for their photo booth rentals, a place for potential clients to see their offerings firsthand. They also plan to use the space to build new relationships with bars, retail stores, and event planners who might be interested in incorporating a photo booth into their space.
