Los Altos History Museum’s upcoming program offers the opportunity to learn about the deep-rooted history and resilience of the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe from Indigenous scholar Dr. Michael Wilcox. In his talk, “ Reframing Indigenous Histories in the Bay Area ,” Dr. Wilcox will trace the Tribe’s presence from the end of the Ice Age to the present day. The program takes place on Wednesday, April 16, from 5:30 to 7pm at the Museum.
Dr. Wilcox will discuss traditional land stewardship, including fire ecology and sustainable food systems that nourished Indigenous communities for thousands of years. He will also highlight the Muwekma Ohlone’s enduring cultural heritage and their resilience through centuries of colonization and removal. A scholar of Yuman descent, Dr. Wilcox has been teaching at Stanford University since 2001 and is currently a Senior Lecturer in Native American Studies and the Center for Comparative Studies in Race
and Ethnicity. He serves as the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer for the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe and a founding board member of the Muwekma Ohlone Cultural Preservation Land Trust.
Tickets are $15 per person and free for Museum members. Space is limited, and advance registration is recommended. To reserve a seat, visit losaltoshistory.org/IndigenousHistories .
