Italian 20th-Century Design Exhibit Opening | SF

As part of SF Design Week, the Italian Cultural Institute is proud to present a tribute to one of the greatest Italian designers of the 20th century, Vico Magistretti.

Free, but an RSVP is required.

Starting from Tuesday, June 10, the galleries of the Institute will host an exhibition made possible by the collaboration with the Milan-based Fondazione Studio Museo Vico Magistretti, directed by Rosanna Pavoni.

Magistretti (1920-2006), architect and furniture designer, was a major figure in Italian industrial design for six decades, and his work is known for the simplicity of its lines, absence of needless ornamentation and engagement with local traditions. Through sketches, drawings, photographs, notes and letters, this exhibition tells the story of the professional collaboration between the Milanese master and some of the most important Italian design companies — Artemide, De Padova, Flou, Oluce, and Schiffini — which lasted more than twenty years.

The materials come directly from Magistretti’s studio, and were carefully chosen from among 30,000 sketches and technical drawings, 7,000 photographs, 3,000 documents and a large collection of prototype models kept by the Magistretti Foundation and catalogued by the Regional Government of Lombardy. The project is curated by Simona Romano and elaborated by Luca Poncellini with graphics by Davide Fornari.
