It’s a tough time for local bookstores, what with the social distancing and the sheltering in place. So we’re raising funds to help local Bay Area bookstores stay in business.
This week: Science journalists Carl Zimmer and Apoorva Mandavilli discuss their experiences covering the coronavirus pandemic, including a Q&A.
Carl Zimmer is the author of thirteen books about science. His newest book is She Has Her Mother’s Laugh: The Power, Perversions, and Potential of Heredity. His column Matter appears each week in the New York Times. Zimmer’s writing has earned a number of awards, including the Stephen Jay Gould Prize, awarded by the Society for the Study of Evolution.
Apoorva Mandavilli is a frequent contributor to The New York Times, where she writes mostly about infectious diseases. She has also written for The Atlantic, The New Yorker, Slate, Nature, Scientific American and others. She’s the 2019 winner of the Victor Cohn Prize for Excellence in Medical Reporting, as well as founding editor and editor-in-chief of the autism news site Spectrum. With Nidhi Subbaraman, she launched Culture Dish, a nonprofit dedicated to enhancing diversity in science journalism.
The beneficiary:
Green Apple Books was founded in 1967 in the Richmond District, where it has grown over the years to ten times its original size, expanding to include Green Apple on the Park in the Sunset, and recently Browser Books on Fillmore St. This enormous, jam-packed store sells new and used books, as well as comics, magazines, DVDs, and gifts. The store’s interior hasn’t changed much over time. The gas light fixtures are still visible on the second floor. The stairs still creak and the dust fights back against weekly cleanings. It’s a beloved San Francisco institution, and a treasure trove of books about everything, from history and science, to sex and art. Green Apple is owned by a group of former employees, and current staff are represented by the UFCW, Local 5.
Every penny you spend on tickets to this event goes directly to Green Apple Books.
