Come join the 5th annual Juneteenth open roda. This celebration will be on Saturday, June 15th, 1 pm-4 pm at Lake Merritt by the arches.
In Oakland, as a tribute to the freedom of the ancestors and as part of the Juneteenth celebrations, Capoeira teachers of African descent will be here to celebrate with an open roda and workshop exchange.
Everyone please dress in white to pay homage to the capoeiristas of old that would wear their best clothes, white linen, to church or to a party, and then take part in capoeira afterward.
This event is free, but they are asking for $10 donation or contribute a dish to help cover expenses for food and drink for the community.
Juneteenth is a holiday that commemorates the freeing of the enslaved African. It is a celebration of African American freedom and achievement that encourages continuous self-development and respect for all cultures.
