Event Details

This year is the Fifth Kwanzaa Celebration 2010 for the city of San Francisco. The celebration is seven days of free events throughout the city to celebrate the seven principles (Nguzo Saba) of Kwanzaa. There will be plenty of food and live entertainment, featuring renowned blues and jazz vocalist Lady Mem’fis and blues legend Bobbie Spider Webb.

All events are free and open to the public.

Kwanzaa 2010 Schedule

Day 1 – Umoja – Sunday, December 26, 2010
Umoja (unity): to strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation and race.
– 6 p.m., West Bay Conference Center
, 1290 Fillmore – The first night candle lighting ceremony, pouring of libations and free blues concert by Bobbie Webb

Day 2 – Kujichagulia – Monday, December 27, 2010
Kujichagulia (self-determination): to define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves and speak for ourselves.
– 12 noon, City Hall,
1 Dr. Goodlett Way – Event honoring Rashima Davis of the Buchanan YMCA, live performances by gospel choir
– 6 p.m., Gussies Chicken and Waffles
, 1521 Eddy – Reggae band, plus serving complimentary food and refreshments

Day 3 – Ujima – Tuesday, December 28, 2010
Ujima (collective work and responsibility): to build and maintain our community together and make our sisters’ and brothers’ problems our problems and to solve them together.
-3 p.m., Bayview YMCA
/Bayview Library, 1601 Lane St. – Spoken Word, poetry and food

Day 4 – Ujamaa – Wednesday December 29, 2010
Ujamaa (cooperative economics): to build and maintain our own stores, shops and other businesses together.
– 1:00 p.m., Buchanan YMCA
/WAFRC, 1530 Buchanan; Drumming, refreshments, community vendors and keynote speaker from Urban Solutions
– 7 p.m., Minnie and Lovie Rec Center
, 650 Capitol St.; Rhythm and Blues band, dancing, modern & African dance performances & Kwanzaa dinner

Day 5 – Nia – Thursday, December 30, 2010
Nia (purpose): to make our collective vocation the building of our community to restore our people to their traditional greatness.
– 6 p.m. program, African American Arts and Culture Complex
, 762 Fulton – Variety spoken word, children’s performances, Kwanzaa song performance and dinner

Day 6 – Kuumba – Friday, December 31, 2010
Kuumba (creativity): to do as much as we can to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.
– 1 pm to 5pm, The Jazz Heritage Center’s Koret Lobby
/Yoshi’s, 1330 Fillmore – Jazz performance by Lady Mem’fis, Shakespeare oration and afro solo theater.

Day 7 – Imani – Saturday, January 1, 2011
Imani (faith): to believe with our hearts in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders and the righteousness and victory of our struggle.
– 3 p.m., Marcus Books
, 1712 Fillmore – African drumming, screening by the SF Black Film Festival, Spoken word, motown music & dinner, plus gifts given out to community children
