Presidio Free Programs: Talks, Music & Performances | SF

San Francisco’s tradition of diverse cultural expression started at the Presidio, and continues today with events that enlighten, engage, and entertain, taking place at the Presidio Officers’ Club.

Enjoy topical discussions, live music, dance, and interactive family activities, all free to the public and sponsored by the Presidio Trust, in partnership with cultural institutions from across the Bay Area.

Join San Francisco Poet Laureate Alejandro Murguía as he traverses history, poetry, and personal memoir to trace indigenous and Latino-Hispanic contributions to San Francisco. Murguía will focus on the blossoming of the Latino community in the Mission District from 1970-1990 and the current struggles to maintain its identity.

Alejandro Murguía is a professor in Latina Latino studies at San Francisco State University. He is the author of three books: The Medicine of Memory: A Mexican Clan in California (University of Texas Press), Stray Poems (City Lights books) and This War Called Love. Murguía received an American Book Award for This War Called Love, and in May 2014 SF Weekly named him Best Local Author. He is the sixth San Francisco Poet Laureate and the first Latino to hold the post.
