Legion of Honor Reopens with Exhibition on Pompeii and New Sculptures in Court of Honor
The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco announce the reopening of the Legion of Honor. The museum opens to the public on Friday, May 7, and to members on Wednesday and Thursday May 5 and 6.
What’s New?
Two new special exhibitions will premiere at the museum when it reopens. Last Supper in Pompeii: From the Table to the Grave is the first exhibition to focus on the love of food and drink in the ancient city of Pompeii. Presenting magnificent Roman sculptures, mosaics, frescoes, precious metals, and more, this spectacular exhibition features many pieces presented in the United States for the very first time, all acting as witnesses to the destruction of Pompeii in AD79.New, powerful sculptures—seemingly risen from the nearby Pacific Ocean—will greet visitors alongside Auguste Rodin’s The Thinker in the Court of Honor. The exhibition Wangechi Mutu: I Am Speaking, Are You Listening?, which continues through the whole first floor of the museum, critiques colonial legacies, patriarchal and racist power structures, and dominant narratives in art history.
Free Admission for Essential Workers
From reopening through December 31, 2021, the Legion of Honor and the de Young will offer free general admission for essential workers, who will also receive a $15 discount on tickets to special exhibitions.
Free Saturdays
Continuing the popular Free Saturdays program, general admission to the Legion of Honor and the de Young museum is free every Saturday for all residents of the nine-county Bay Area.
Rigorous Health and Safety Measures
The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco are maintaining their rigorous health and safety measures based on city guidelines. Visitor capacity has been reduced to less than 25 percent and a timed ticket is required, to ensure proper social distancing. Face coverings are required for staff and adult visitors at all times in the buildings.
