Community Dialogue Concerning the Encampment Sweeps
Oakland City Church, 2735 MacArthur Boulevard
November 2nd at 11:00 a.m.
Del Seymour was a known street level figure in the San Francisco, Tenderloin. He was ravaged by a chemical addiction that found him sleeping in doorways and pushing all of his worldly possessions around in a shopping cart. He fueled his thirst for drugs with the proceeds from pimping and other illicit endeavors. And then one day Del Seymour found recovery. In his newly released biography, Mayor of the Tenderloin, New York Times recognized biographer, Alison Ownings chronicles Del Seymour’s rise from the streets to social justice visionary. Del Seymour founded Code Tenderloin, an organization that helps its clients leap over boundaries that stand between them and living wage jobs. On Saturday morning, November 2nd at 11 a.m., Del Seymour and his biographer Alison Ownings will discuss the book.
The book discussion will be followed by a community forum about legislation which now makes it possible for local municipalities to sweep encampments for the unhoused with little prior notice. Housing rights activist Lisa “Tiny” Gray-Garcia of Poor News and other grassroots advocates will share their boots on the ground observations.
