Event Details

Spanish Surrealist Salvador Dalí spent the years of World War II as a refugee, staying most of the time in California at the Del Monte Lodge in Pebble Beach, where the coastline reminded him of his home near Cadaques. While in California he pursued his ambition to break into the film industry, starting with a lavish surrealistic party at the Del Monte Lodge, and culminating in his collaborations with Alfred Hitchcock and Walt Disney.

This talk by filmmaker Ted Nicolaou examines this period of his life, his connection to the landscape, his prodigious artistic output in that time, the qualities of his art that appealed to such distinguished filmmakers as Hitchcock and Disney, and his largely frustrating encounters with the world of Hollywood.

Nicolaou has directed cult horror films in addition to dozens of innovative documentary bonus features for the Walt Disney Studios, including the feature-length documentary Dalí & Disney: A Date With Destino, for the Fantasia 2000 Blu-ray, about the unlikely friendship and collaboration between Walt Disney and surrealist painter Salvador Dalí to produce the world’s first surrealist cartoon, Destino. He is curator of the exhibition Disney and Dali: Architects of the Imagination, currently showing at the Walt Disney Family Museum in the Presidio.

Presented in association with the Walt Disney Family Museum.
