Influential Mission District institution and community arts space Galería de la Raza is pleased to announce its 40th Anniversary Season. To commemorate this pivotal milestone, the Galería has created a robust itinerary of events that will take place this Fall. The celebratory programming is comprised of four events; the Retrospective Anniversary Exhibition, an interactive Family Day, a Latin Jazz concert at Yerba Buena Gardens and an exclusive finale ceremony at Brava Theatre Center featuring Guillermo Gómez-Peña and Sandra Cisneros.

The inaugural event, the Retrospective Anniversary Exhibition, will document the visual landscape that has contributed to the shaping of Galería’s mission of fostering public awareness and appreciation of Latino/Chicano art. The exhibition will traverse through the organization’s inception born of cultural activism to its current standing as an international forum for examination and expression of artistic concepts central to the Latino/Chicano experience. The exhibit will span artworks from 1970 to 2010 and will feature works by several artists such Yolanda Lopez, José Montoya , John Leaños and Rupert Garcia.

The opening reception will be held on Friday, September 24, 2010 from 7:30-10:00 p.m. The exhibit will be on display through January 29, 2011 and is free and open to the public.
