The Compound Gallery in Emeryville is honored to present a new show “Mostly Real” by Guy Colwell, a venerated and quintessential Bay Area artist who will unveil more than 50 paintings that explore Social Surreal themes like race, inequality, alienation and injustice that have been at the core of his work — and his rich and colorful life experiences — for more than 40 years.
Colwell’s show — which will launch September 2 with a 6-9 p.m. gallery reception featuring the artist — will highlight works inspired from Colwell’s own life: from participation in Vietnam War protests, and the jail time that resulted; the underground comics scene of the 1970s; courtroom sketching for the Patty Hearst trial; and more. These life events have manifested in a body of work that is rich, imaginative and complex, with many pieces playing on the juxtaposition between Civilization and the Natural World.
