Event Details

Seven teams made up of the most qualified student hackers from across the nation are coming together for a common goal: to engineer the next buzz-worthy music tech products. Red Bull Hack the Hits presented by Recess is coming to Folsom Street Foundry on April 8-9, 2016.

Free to attend, but an RSVP is required. Your RSVP will give you access to see the final product and the Dan Deacon show.

After a 24 hour hackathon grind, students will present their creation in front of a live audience followed by a performance by electronic musician, Dan Deacon, with opener Nico Luminous. Teams will be judged on three criteria: usability, musicality and innovation.

Red Bull Hack the Hits is a hackathon that challenges participants to develop a new way to play a sound.

The Judging Criteria

  • Musicality – This hack has to make music, right? How well can an artist incorporate the sounds from your hack into a performance or studio session?
  • Innovative – There’s a lot of music tech out there. How well does your hack stand out next to all the other tech out there?
  • Usability – Making music should be easy. Can anyone pick up your hack and start playing quickly?

Competitors include:

  • Tiffany Jiang; the 2015 grand prize winner of Facebook’s Global Hackathon
  • Daniel Minjares; endorsed by Autism Speaks for designing educational games for Autistic students, as well as accomplished student musicians ranging from classically trained pianists to club-headlining DJs
