“Old School, New Light”: Short Film Showcase | Berkeley

Old School, New Light presents newly found and some lost films shown previously in classrooms or given short subject credibility by the Academy of Motion Pictures and the international film community. 

Glas (1958) 11 min. Director: Bert Haanstra
Glass (Dutch: Glas) is a 1958 Dutch short documentary film by director and producer Bert Haanstra. The film won the Academy Award for Documentary Short Subject in 1959. The film is about the glass industry in the Netherlands. It contrasts the hand made crystal from the Royal Leerdam Glass Factory with automated bottle making machines.

Le poulet (1965) 15 min. Director: Claude Berri
The Chicken (French: Le Poulet) is a 1965 French short comedy film directed by Claude Berri. It won an Academy Award in 1966 for Best Short Subject. Tells the story about a boy who tries to save his pet chicken from the culinary intentions of his parents.

The Golden Fish (1959) 19 min. Director: Edmond Séchan
Similar in design and technique to “The Red Balloon,” and winner of the 1959 International Critics Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, this is the story of a boy who has a goldfish as a pet, and the family cat has other plans for the goldfish, and a canary protects it by distracting the cat.

The film series is presented by LOOP (Lost and Out Of Print) in connection with the Berkeley Underground Film Society at The Tannery in Berkeley, CA.
