Event Details

With the introduction of “Fresh Off the Boat” to prime time programming on network television and other notable strides in media, Asian Americans are increasing their representation in mainstream media, with Asian American writers, actors, and artists taking control of their storytelling and representations of their communities. This event will focus on what this means for the community – the progress that has been made, the stories we choose to tell, and the work that is still left to do.

Performers:
Jason Bayani is the author of “Amulet” from Write Bloody Press. He’s an MFA grad from Saint Mary’s College, a Kundiman fellow, and is currently the program manager for Kearny Street Workshop, the longest running multi-disciplinary Asian Pacific American arts organization in the country.

Dhaya Lakshminarayanan was named Best Comedian by the San Francisco Bay Guardian (2013). She’s Comedy Central Asia Grand Prize Winner of “The Ultimate Comedy Challenge.” Her credits include: Snap Judgment’s Live at the Nourse Theater, hosting The Moth GrandSLAM at the Castro Theater, and performing with Janeane Garofalo, Jello Biafra, Dick Gregory, and Greg Proops. The premiere year of WGBH’s “High School Quiz Show,” which Dhaya hosted, won an Emmy. Her play “Nerd Nation” is sponsored by The Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center. She has been profiled in The Boston Globe, The East Bay Express, and The San Jose Mercury News.

Jeff Chang has written extensively on culture, politics, the arts and music. His first book, Can’t Stop Won’t Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation, garnered many honors, including the American Book Award and the Asian American Literacy Award. His newest book, Who We Be: The Colorization of America, talks about the social history, the cultural influence – and the massive selling – of multiculturalism in America.

This event is sponsored by Rowbotham International, part of the Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Celebration.
