Event Details

Pioneering weekly paper the San Francisco Bay Guardian is putting on a free rock party to celebrate the 2010 Best of The Bay winners. The Bay Guardian handpicked local musical heroes that, they feel, represent San Francisco’s values best. Here’s the lineup, see for yourself:

SF Bay Guardian’s “Best of the Bay” Rock Party
August 5, 2010 – 9pm
– Mezzanine, 444 Jessie Street, SF
– FREE, but we recommend arriving early

  • The gem here is headliner Chuck Prophet who now calls the San Francisco’s Mission District home. Chuck’s music is a vivid parade of razor-edged one-liners camouflaged in a slack-jawed drawl, songs about heartbreak and everyman heroism, drenched in twisted lines of rude Telecaster. With 11 solo albums and 10 releases with his former rock band Green on Red, he’s got cred.
  • With her brand new release ‘Cry Tomorrow,’ Stephanie Finch and The Company Men recalls ‘Loaded’ era Velvet Underground tunes alongside The Modern Lovers. The album was produced by headliner Chuck Prophet and Stephanie’s also played with the Red House Painters and Jonathan Richman. Not bad company if you want to be taken seriously.
  • Reminiscent of vocal harmony groups of the 60’s, opening act The Bitter Honeys will perform their own original songs.
  • And now for something different: The Freeze, a stage show in which six performers will take the crowd on a non-stop, hip-hop improv ride, spinning cues from the audience into instantaneous lyrics. In simple terms, it’s the Wu Tang Clan meets Who’s Line is it Anyway.
  • DJ set by Norwegian transplant DJ Ome, who is influenced by Deadmau5 and DJ Tiesto.

In 1974, the Guardian blazed a trail by being the first paper to present “best of” awards. Our 2010 Best of the Bay winners are revealed in the Guardian’s July 28th issue and includes the annual Readers Poll which categories include: Food and Drink, Arts and Nightlife, Shopping, City Living, and a special reader’s own “Best of the Best.”
