This Friday night at the de Young Museum take free swing dancing lessons & try out your moves to a live band, enjoy a poetry reading, watch a world premiere documentary about the world-famous artist Ruth Asawa and take an art class to learn how to construct your own wire structure or make a totem boat.

6:00–6:30 (dance lessons) and 6:00–8:30 p.m. (live music)

Lessons: The always-popular coach and choreographer Cynthia Glinka instructs, inspires, and entertains. With her dance tips and tricks, you won’t miss a beat! Join us on the dance floor and learn some new moves, partner-dance style.

Live Music: Jonathan Poretz and the Moodswing Orchestra. The “Rat Pack Is Back” alum Jonathan Poretz swings the songs made famous by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Bobby Darin, and Tony Bennett. He is backed by Mike Young’s 12-piece Moodswing Orchestra, known for its authentic covers of the greatest big bands of the 1930s, ’40s, and ’50s. Bring your dancing shoes!

Documentary – World Premiere

There will be limited seating. Free tickets will be available starting at 6:30 p.m. Reservations will not be taken.

The world premiere of the documentary film Ruth Asawa: Roots of an Artist tells the story of world-famous artist Ruth Asawa, who has been a tireless advocate for community art projects and art education in public schools. This film is a collaboration between filmmaker Bob Toy, Lola Fraknoi of Bethany Center, and the Academy of Art University. Asawa’s family and Toy, the film’s director, will be present to answer questions and to celebrate the life of the beloved San Francisco artist.

About Friday Nights at the De Young
On Friday nights the entire museum is open until 8:45 p.m. Friday Nights at the de Young offers a variety of interdisciplinary arts programs, including live music, poetry, films, dance, tours, and lectures. The cafe is open with a special Friday Nights dinner menu, and a no-host cocktail bar is serving drinks. There are art making activities for everyone. All Friday Night programming is free unless otherwise noted.
