Event Details

Author William Gee Wong will be in conversation with Roy Chan about his recently published book Sons of Chinatown.
In Sons of Chinatown, pioneering journalist William Gee Wong chronicles a two-generation father-son story beginning from his father’s experiences as an immigrant during the Chinese Exclusion Era through Wong’s own journey from his beginnings in Oakland’s Chinatown to acclaim on the national print stage.

A few of Wong’s notable positions as a journalist include long-term roles at the Wall Street Journal (1970-79) and the Oakland Tribune (1979-1996). He is also the author of Yellow Journalist: Dispatches from Asian America (2001), Images of America: Oakland’s Chinatown (2004), and co-author of Images of America: Angel Island (2007).

Roy Chan is an Oakland-based oral historian and urban planner committed to using the power of storytelling to build community and empower local residents to have a voice in the local decision-making process. Since 2007, he has been director of the Oakland Chinatown Oral History Project / AAPI Elder Voices Project and was previously Co-Executive Director at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center.
